The other day I was perusing the makeup isle at my local Target, doing some research (don't you wish you could blame your makeup shopping on research too??) and I found some real gems that I wanted to share!

First, one of my all time favorite eyeshadows is Dazzlelight from MAC. I found seriously an EXACT replica of it from the E.L.F. brand at Target. It is called Ivory and is $1. ONE DOLLA. It's the perfect light shade without being too white. I couldn't find any pictures of it online (weird?) but I just saw it last week at Target so go check it out.

I have a (un)healthy obsession with undereye highlighter/brightners. I saw this one from E.L.F. and am dying to try it! It looks totally amaze and here's what is said about it online:

"Correct under eye problematic areas such as dark circles and bags easily and effectively! Contains vitamins A & E, chamomile, caffeine and green tea to moisturize, soothe, and tighten the skin around the delicate eye area. Blends in easily and evenly to provide a smooth and natural finish."

A concealer on one end and a brightener on the other. Hello perfection! And...it's $3. True story.

E.L.F. Studio Glossy Gloss in Dragon Fruit. This is a great pink for everyday! And an AMAZING pink for $3!

The last find I discovered is the E.L.F. Essential Waterproof Eyeliner Pen. It's practically a dead ringer for MAC's Penultimate liner and at $1, you can't go wrong!!

Recently, one of my bridal clients brought me this picture as an inspiration for her wedding makeup. I was floored! This is the exact essence everyone needs to have for their spring makeup look. Plus, it's our girl Rachel B. so basically we can't go wrong.

Do we love or do we love?

This makeup is all about the glow. Start with an aluminizing moisturizer (I like MAC Strobe Cream) and use a lightweight foundation on top. If all you have is a full coverage foundation, mix your foundation with the moisturizer so that it sheers it out.

Skip the powder (unless you're extremely oily).

Now for the bronzer and blush. (the piece de resistance of this look!) Use your bronzer with a fluffy brush (preferably a MAC 187 or something similar) under your cheekbones, up to your temples, down your nose and along your jawline (blend in circles and don't use too much product). Try to think of where your skin would naturally get kissed by the sun. Switch to an angled blush brush (or just a regular one if that's whatcha got on hand) and concentrate a pinky-peach blush (NARS Orgasm, MAC Dainty or Peachykeen) on the apples of the cheeks and blend upward. (don't go below the cheekbone. nobody wants to see captain blush-face)

Now, add a bit of liquid highlighter (I like MAC Lustre Drops in Pink Rebel or ELF Shimmering Facial Whip in Pink Lemonade) on top of the cheekbones and down the bridge of the nose. Mix a little highlighter with your concealer and dot that in the corners of your eyes.

Now for the eyes. Put a light shimmery (not sparkly) eyeshadow under the brow and near the corners of the eyes (MAC Dazzlelight or anything similar. NOT WHITE.) Line your eyes with a shimmery brown eye kohl (aka something smudge-able, I like MAC Teddy) and smudge with your finger (it doesn't need to be perfect). If you're feeling fancy you can smudge it out with a brush that has a little bit of bronzey eyeshadow on it. We're gonna skip any eyeshadow on the lid because you just don't need it! Add several coats of black mascara, finish off with a pinky-peach gloss (any of your favorites will work. MAC Love Nectar would be gorg too.) and VOILA! Pretty as a picture and oh-so-ready for spring.

Oh! and don't forget to touch up those brows. We wouldn't want Rachel to be disappointed in our attempt at copying her.

Please excuse the interruption of our usually scheduled posts. H has had her baby! We will be interspersing some archived gems with new posts. Don't fret, these are oldies but goodies :)

I know everyone has their opinion on the best self tanner. Many a blog post have been dedicated to finding one. People claim, oh this one doesn't smell, doesn't make you orange, blah blah blah.

I know I live in AZ where the sun shines 365 but I can't get myself to suffer the consequences of wrinkles and sun spots and freckles. I am already paying for my youth (ha!) of baby oil tanning sessions. (I should sue Johnson and Johnson for future skin peels and botox treatments). Anyway, this product is the next bestest thing.

For reals. Have you guys heard of FAKE BAKE (not tanning beds, eww. gross.)

Hillary introduced me to this product, cause let's be honest. Friends don't let friends be pasty. (Thanks, Hill)

The airbrush stuff is fanastical. Like you just close your eyes and spray it on and

wa-la!! You are two shades tanner! Hillary likes to put her hair in a shower cap and spray it on while standing in the shower (good idea for blondes) but I just take my shirt off and go to town. Granted, my bathroom counter is orange, but whatev. My face is a gorgeous bronze!

The lotion is a little trickier. You HAVE to use the gloves. But, unlike other tanning products, you can see where you are putting it because it tints your skin immediately! Tan on the spot!

Another award show.

Another chance for us to pick apart some celeb fashion.

too bad most of the fashion moments were disappointing. {sigh}.

H: Booooring. Nothing to write home about. I think I already forgot what she looked like.

C: More redeemable than the Golden Globes ensemble we saw last week, but at this point I am seriously wondering if she got a reallly bad hair cut she doesn't want anyone to know about...?

H: Pretty, but pass.

C: I loved this dress, and was surprised that many of the dresses I loved were on a bunch of unknown actresses!

H: I don't understand this dress. Batman meets 80's bride? Fail.

C: Stop it. Stop it right now. We get it...you want to be Britney Spears circa 2001.

H: Horror story. Wouldn't be bad for a beach cover-up...but excuse me, that's a red carpet you're standing on.

C: Oh, Busy Phillips. A Target maxi for the SAG awards? Really? Where was your BFF Michelle Williams when you really needed her?

H: Pretty color. Otherwise forgetful.

C: I loved her in this. The hair and makeup are icing on the cake. Note to Dianna: you do "pretty" wayyy better than you do edgy.

H: Glad Emma took a chance with the hem-line. It's fun, but not my personal cup o' tea cause of the shoe-sies. I here dub this honorable.

C: HATE. Her bag looks like a corsage, which just finishes off the "I'm going to my high school prom" look perfectly. Even the hair and lip color are bad.

H: Seriously? A trash bag? You're Angelina-freaking-Jolie and you wear a trash bag?

C: This is TERRIBLE. She looks emaciated and what is happening with her hair?

H: I think I had this dress in 1996.

C: Death by print.

H: Oh Zoe. I LOVED this dress. She looks absolutely stunning!

C: I agree she looks beautiful, but what's with the wife beater tank under the dress?

H: This color is so yum. Mmmmm... I would have done her hair differently though.

C: Ditto.

H: The top is so pretty. The hem looks unfinished. Not for me.

C: Rose took a chance and I still can't decide how I feel about it. It would be totally acceptable for a premiere, but for an awards show? Questionable. She does have some bangin' bangs though.

H: Who pairs a halter with a giant choker? My neck hurts just looking at this. UGH.

C: Attack of the killer accessory! I demand to know who let this woman out of the house in a halter dress and choker!

H: SO pretty.

C: LOVE. one of my favorites of the night.

H: Goooorgeous. I want to swim in the fabric. The color is so refreshing.

C: Dreamboat City, USA. Population...what's this girl's name? Anyway, I die over this dress and the color and her skin and the whole kit and caboodle.

H: Love her. Love her dress. Not in love with the shoes.

C: Love it from the waist up. But I don't understand the hemline or the shoes!

H: This was my favorite of the whole entire night. It's interesting, the color is amazing, it was accessorized beautifully. She looks beyond.

C: Totally agree. Fabulosity. She looks like a million bucks!

Head and Shoulders Review and Giveaway

I tend to be a little flaky. And Iím not talking about my timeliness or lack of responsibility. It seems that during the winter, itís not only my skin that gets dry. My scalp gets all kinds of flakes, which is totally awesome since my hair is almost black. Those white flakes donít show at all! (yeah right.)

Despite these issues, I never try dandruff shampoos because I am afraid they will smell like zinc and will strip my beautifully applied hair color (H would not be a happy camper).

When I got the chance to check out new Head & Shoulderís Apple Hair Care I was excited to try something new. Especially when I found out it was safe for color treated hair!! Holla for my pre-conceived notions being wrong!

Does anybody else ever pretend they are in a shampoo commercial when they wash their hair? This is how I felt when using this shampoo. After using it, I was amazed by how flake-free and salon-beautified (looking) my hair was!

I swear I was like the girl on the hair commercial with bouncy hair and (bonus) no embarrassing flakes on my shoulders!

The next thing I noticed was the fresh green apple scent of the products. I basically smelled like fresh apple crisp all day. Every time I would move my hair or adjust my bangs, I caught a whiff of the delicious fragrance. It was really exciting to find a shampoo and conditioner that delivered so muchóat such a great price point!

How easy is it to run to the local grocery store and have confidence in the shampoo you buy there?

PS As usual, my husband just had to try this product. He was totally won over by the fresh apple scent and the moisturizing nature of the shampoo! Looks like we will both be using this to get ready for date night this weekend.

Always looking for fun new ways to wear the hair. I came across this little gem.

So cute, right? I just wish there were some step-by-step instructions for us to model ourselves after these models. Well, I don't want to wish my life away so I'll just have to do something about it...

Unfortunatley for you, all I had handy was my phone to take pictures...my photographer was unavailable. Rude.

1. Start with a good blow out. Whether it was 3 days prior (like mine) or fresh outta the shower is irrelevant. I just sprayed a little dry shampoo on my roots and blended it in with my fingers.

2. Tease your roots, from front to back. hairspray shouldn't be necessary.

3. You'll need a set of these puppies. $2 dollas at your local grocery store.

3. Get two headbands in place.

5. If your hair is thick, put it in a high pony tail. Placement is key. You don't want to look like a ballerina. Tease said pony tail a little to create texture and twist hair into bun using bobby pins to hold in place. Or if your hair is more fine (like mine) just tease your ends a bit and twist into a top knot. Secure with bobby pins.

And there you have it. A new 'do to beat the mundane second day pony hair.

PS: 5 days til my due date and I think this is going to be the hospital hair do. Unless I have time for a major blow out...love/hate that I care what I look like when I first meet this baby. Oh and there are always pictures.

What's the big idea?

I am a devotee.

I like certain things and sticking to them.

Perhaps it's not necessarily loyalty (although I suppose that is part of it), but I think mostly I don't like change. AND I have a hard time spending more money than absolutely necessary on many things. Truth be told, I haven't paid retail prices for makeup in so long that when the time comes that I will have to pay full price the line in the sand will be drawn: what am I willing to splurge on and what can I save on?

My basics are first: skin care. foundation. concealer. gel eyeliner.

The "accessory" makeup (i.e. blush, eye shadow, lip color) is always changing and, therefore, I never feel the need to spend a fortune on it.

This leads me to my point.

NARS Orgasm blush. Is it really all that it is cracked up to be? Do I REALLY need to spend $30 on a blush? Every time that danged blush wins another beauty award or is mentioned in passing by an A-list celeb, I feel out of the loop because I've never tried it. Not a swipe, not a dab. Is it as amazing as everyone says? Is it really so universal? I've gone thus far in my makeup career without it, so do I really NEED to buy it now?

Time to use your power of persuasion, peeps.

Should I give in and purchase the ever elusive Orgasm blush? Or am I not missing out at all?

The bow on the back of this dress makes me incredibly happy inside. Gorgeous.

I LOVED this look on Michelle. Yes, even the headband. (the hair color is...unfortunate) But what I loved most was her Acceptance/Thank you speech. What a cute little mama!

C disagrees with Michelle. Navy velvet is not her friend. And neither is her new strawberry blonde do. Usually at least her makeup impresses, but nope. The ball got completely dropped.

I'm really loving the tangerine/teal combo right now.

Been so busy preparing for baby... It's been hard taking "me" time. Which, by the way, I love.

DO NOT try this at home.

I do not recommend a at-home hair color session. Espesh by a husband wearing camo. But a Nebraska mama's gotta make do with less than two weeks to go!

But don't be alarmed as it was well supervised and the results were flawless. Maybe hubby should quit law school and head to beauty school...

Cononut Oil-not just for baking

My latest beauty obsession: Coconut oil.

I picked this up over the holidays (at Walmart!) so I could make some homemade body scrubs for friends and family.

Little did I know all the benefits that coconut oil has!

Hair:

*helps with re-growth of damaged hair

*moisturizes the scalp and keeps it free from any yucky scalp conditions (i.e. dandruff and lice)

*great deep conditionar

Skin:

*no chance of an adverse reaction

*moisturizes

*delays wrinkles and sagging of skin

*helps with psoriasis and eczema

*speeds up healing process of bruises and forms a barrier to protect against infection

Other fun facts:

*stops tooth decay

*helps with weight loss because it is easy to digest

*speeds up metabolism (when used in cooking)

*an antioxidant and antibacterial (because of the lauric acid)

Guess what I'm gonna be schmearing on this pregnant belly of mine until I deliver? Yup.

Oh! And you probably (definitely) need the recipe for the homemade body scrub (adapted from a few different recipes I have found)

Pumpkin Brown Sugar Body Scrub:

2 Tbsp. pumpkin pie spice

1 c. coconut oil (melted)

The only reason why a stylist wouldn't want you to bring in a picture is because they can't rise to the occasion...and then you should find a new one. So don't be afraid, and do a little research before your hair appointment!

My H is back!

H's month long voyage back to AZ was several things: fun, busy, and much too short. Now that she left on a jet plane again last week, here's a readers digest version of what we did together when she was here:

Compared bellies. (we both think our own is bigger and that the other looks cuter)

Gave H's brows a much needed makeover. Now, she's practically Aria from PLL.

I got bangs! My hair's so now. (Quoted from Legally Blonde.. anyone? anyone?) No, but I got some nice faux bangs to add to my hair repertoire. H kindly blended and beautified them just for me.

Our annual bestie gift exchange for Christmas. We both got milkshakes with dinner and jewelry for presents. Great minds! (Among other things, I got H one of the rose gold bangles I mentioned here, and she got me some fab turquoise earrings from Anthro.)

Watching our cute kiddos (born exactly 2 weeks apart) deepen their love for each other. Their wedding is in t-minus 19 years.

We engaged in lotsa talking. Baby names (I have mine decided but H is still playing the field), blogging, fashion, and catching up.

Oh, and we ate. A lot.

Mostly chocolate.

Anyway, she accepted the role for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and the makeover is nothing less than shocking. Just see for yourself.

statement tights. I, for one, am super loving this trend.

For so many reasons. For one, it's winter, yay for warm legs! Secondly, my legs have reached a new shade of white being in Nebraska. Third- it's past difficult to bend over and shave these puppies. {see belly}

PS: I am aware this trend totally got ripped by Fashion Police. IE: Khloe, Selena, and Sarah Jessica.

Nail Trends

Here's a serious question: How do we feel about the forth-nail-accent trend?? I can't decide!!

One nail trend I am not liking right now is the spiky nail shape, as seen on celebs such as Rihanna, Fergie and Beyonce (maybe it has something to do with celebs that only go by their first name. Stay tuned for it to be seen on Madonna and Ke$ha.)

Oh, and let's be sure to run far, far away from anything resembling this:

(remember when acrylic nails and nail piercings were in style? I shudder at the memory.)

As a side note, usually I am not a big glitter fan, but this season you can utilize it restrictively on your nails!!

Snoogie pregnancy pillow (I may or may not have already bought this for myself and am currently sleeping with it. Miracle.Worker.)

I've been craving Terri's dark chocolate oranges. I called every store in the state (practically) and they are all SOLD OUT. This, of course, angered me and made my craving that much more intense. Since I couldn't get the orange, I settled for eating 2 boxes of orange sticks (in 24 hours).

I got suckered into this one. I was all prepared to not get an expensive stroller but once the guy in Buy Buy Baby demo'd this for me, it seemed stupid to not get it! So now, I just need the accessories to go with it (gotta love that it's all a la carte! after all, money totally grows on trees.)

I've really been wanting a good red-orange lipstick, but haven't found the perfect color. Any suggestions?

Last, but not least, I am in need of some serious pampering. i.e. facial, massage, keratin blow out, and a mani/pedi. Who wants to splurge for me? Good thing Santa can be extra gracious to his pregnant wife :)

Miracle Oil and Kiehls Creme de Corps

Here's the homemade Oreo recipe (taken from Just Cook Already's blog):

The Oreo Cookie:

Ingredients:

1 Devil Cake Mix
1/3 cup oil
2 eggs

Cookie directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. Mix cake mix, eggs and oil.

3. Roll into balls and bake at 350 degrees for 10 min.

4. Cool.

Butter Cream Frosting:

this makes A LOT of frosting, FYI

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup shortening
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk

Frosting directions:

1. Cream butter and shortening until fluffy.

2. Add vanilla.

3. Slowly pour in powdered sugar, then add milk while mixing.

After the cookies and frosting are made, frost the middle and put together.

Just for the reference of our readers, I have tried these cookies two ways: with buttercream frosting and with cream cheese frosting. I will NEVER go back to the cream cheese (and this is coming from someone who wishes it was socially acceptable to put cream cheese in everything.) I got the tip to try the buttercream from my friend K and will never be the same again. You know how they say your life can change in an instant? This is one of those times.

Welcome to my life. In fact, my iPhone's picture gallery tells a better story of my life than I can probably remember these last few weeks.

Organizing accessories. Did you know that a tall can of Quaker Oats can be turned into the most amazing storage for headbands and scarves?

Taking Dean on photo shoots with me for lack of a babysitter. He really enjoyed himself at the Girls with Glasses shoots (probably because they have some amazing props!)

The sock bun has officially revolutionized my life. I utilize it at the end of every washing cycle (i.e. I wear my hair down for 3 days, and sock bun it for 2 more. wash. and repeat. TMI??)

Found an amazing rose gold bow bracelet to go with my rose gold watch! (best part? under $20!) Fun fact: did you know that rose gold is made from regular yellow gold and copper being mixed together? (yup, you are now smarter from reading this blog.)

Oh, and lotsa eating. This particular craving has been brought to you by Smashburger. Tell them I sent ya (just kidding).

On another note, I'm so glad my girl H finally got a smart phone so that we can communicate more effectively via 24/7 access to the internet, Instagram, and all other social media.

Oh, and if you have an iPhone but have not yet fallen madly in love with the Instagram app...get on that asap.

Beauty Blunders

We have all had our fair share of breaking the beauty laws. Usually it comes from participating in trends that have left us with makeup mishaps or hair horrors.

Unfortunately, it seems that the list of beauty "do's" is not nearly as long as the list of "don'ts". For example, don't (even think about) matching your nail and toenail polish, wearing your hair in a ponytail to bed, leaving your makeup on over night, wearing too much shimmer eyeshadow, or going too long between hair trims.

The bible of beauty rules is exhausting. That's why sometimes we accidently get sidetracked on the wrong path. I, for one, have had my fair share of beauty blunders. I will be generous enough to publicly admit to my mistakes so as to allow our readers to learn from them.

C's Top Beauty Blunders:

1. Wearing a frosted silvery lipstick. Granted, I was in Junior High, but the image of said lipstick still haunts my dreams. AND, I wasn't sure I was going to mention this, but I used it with brown lipliner. Imagine it. No, wait, don't. It's too horrifying.

2. Putting acrylic french tips on my toes. Do you remember this trend? Where we forgot that our feet were our feet and not our hands?

3. I put claw clips in my hair on a daily basis. If this is wrong, I don't want to be right. Hey, at least it's not a scrunchie.

4. Wearing uber-shimmery white eyeshadow under my eyebrows. People still do this. Can you believe?? This look only goes with silver lipstick and brown lipliner (see #1). AKA, never.

If any of you are guilty of any of these beauty crimes, I legally ask of you to cease and desist (unless, of course, your crime is wearing claw clips in your hair. I'm many things, but not a hypocrite).

I am a body wash and loofah kind of girl. I love the feeling of sudsing up, but I hate the sticky or dry reside that often accompanies many body washes. First off, I noticed the fresh and alluring fragrance of the body wash. Dove is famous for its scents being delicious but not overpowering. Then I noticed the consistency of the wash—creamy, and not soapy looking at all. I began to wonder if this moisturizing wash would suds up the way I like it to. I was so pleasantly surprised to find that not only did the cream get super foamy, but I hardly needed to use any of it to wash my whole body.

When I jumped out of the shower, my skin felt uber soft, as though I had already put lotion on! Isn’t it amazing to feel nourished from the outside in? By taking care of my skin, as well as my physical and mental well-being, I can feel renewed each and every day!

Bonus: my husband and toddler love to use this body wash too! It’s so great to find a product that works for my whole family.

A few people have asked me how to create the

SOCK BUN.

Well, since I don't have my partner in crime by my side to do a decent vlog of it, I will hook you up with all the pictures and links you need to create this look at home.

HOW TO and WHAT YOU NEED:

1. One sock, preferably close to your hair color.

If your hair is already thick try using a nylon sock.

2. One pair of scissors, to cut the toes off of the aforementioned sock.

3. Roll that sock into a donut (bun)

4. Watch this video skipping almost to minute 4. {you're welcome for the time save!}

5. Take note that I do NOT recommend doing it pigtail/princess leia-style.

Also, it should be mentioned that I am now scheduling hair appointments for ARIZONA clients starting December. Book now or forever regret it.

CMA Awards Style

Last night was the annual CMA Awards and the stars came out in style (well, some of them.)

Carrie Underwood in Reem Acra on the Red Carpet, which, in my opinion, was her shining fashion moment of the evening.

She was also the host of the awards show. SO basically she got to have like 47 costume changes (must be so tough).
