Lashes: part 1

Lately I have realized that the world of plumping lashes does not just extend to mascara and lash curlers anymore. No, we are surrounded by new technology and ideas that allow us to transform our lashes, whether they be puny and sparse (me) or naturally luscious (H).
I want to go over a little bit of everything with our readers to educate on the different options for maximizing lashes!

Today, let's talk mascara.

Everybody knows their lashes best. You know what works for you and what doesn't. If you want (or need?) to spend $30 on mascara, then more power to you (ahem...H). I, on the other hand, think you can get a great mascara for a great price. Yes, this means shopping at Target for your mascara is a-okay with me! I am an equal opportunity mascara lover.

Here's the high($$$) and low($) and the best of the best.

MAC Haute & Naughty Lash $18: MAC's most dramatic mascara ever, it has a dual brush system that lets you first focus on length, and then really pump up the volume with the plush brush.

Dior Show $25: H's favorite mascara, has a cult following with those who want ultra drama and fat lashes. Is often featured in the "favorites" sections of fashion mags.

Cover Girl Lash Blast $9: A great one-coat mascara that lengthens, thickens in one smooth stroke. I use this on all my clients because it works on literally everyone and allows me to get the drama without 50 coats.

Cover Girl Volume Exact $7: My personal favorite mascara. It's really buildable, which I love. It builds fluffy thickness and length without getting clumpy. The synthetic brush combs through the lashes and deposits just the right amount of product.

L'oreal Voluminous $7. A great thickening mascara that is easy to build plush lashes with. A traditional fave of many.

Maybelline XXL $8: Sports two sides, the first being a white primer that conditions and primes the lashes for the traditional black mascara. Tip: I like to let the primer dry before I put on the black mascara. It helps to solidify the foundation and allows for more buildability!

What is your favorite mascara?

Beach bag essentials

I'm headed to the beach, folks. And don't be surprised if I never return. (I wish).

I've been loading up on my beach essentials and here's what I've come up with:

Wide Brimmed Hat (both to channel J Lo and to block the harmful rays)
Turban scarf (obviously)

Anchor Towel (because I can't get away from nautical. See next item.)

matching euro bathing suits for my boys. obsessed. (this one is from zara.com)

My favorite new sunscreen. Super light, layers great under makeup and it made with physical sunscreens that completely block the sun's rays (hint: look for products with zinc and titanium dioxide instead of the chemicals that are in most sunscreens. check the label for ingredients)

And don't forget this stick for the little ones!! One of the most natural and effective on the market.

Loving these glossy chapsticks. They deposit the perfect amount of color and have SPF! Win/win.

And some curly hair product, because California doesn't condone me wearing my hair straight.

product love

alright ladies.  found a new product to add to your army of haircare.

MOROCCAN OIL
medium hold hairspray

the end.

just kidding, of course.  I can't go without saying how it is everything I want in a hairspray.  Hold/shine, and I can still "run my fingers though it.  OH!  and it smells delectable.  Seriously, you may be tempted to eat it.  get this in your repertoire, stat!  (and no this isn't a paid advertisement)  Just a girl who fell in love with a hairspray.  NBD.

Scarf it

When a trend comes around that allows me to put off washing my hair for yet another day, I'm all over it. Especially when it's this darling!

Before we check out the plethora of ways to tie a scarf around our manes, let's take a moment to thank the late, great Audrey for making the scarf such a statement piece.

And now, some current beauties:

And now for a driving-in-the-car version of my turban scarf outfit:
Scarf: vintage
Earrings and sunnies: H&M
Neon Tee: Gap
Lipgloss: MAC Pink Lemonade

For a how-to on tying a turban headband, watch this darling video by our friends Brooke and Summer! (the scarf part is about 45 seconds in)

CFDA Awards

My favorites from the CFDA Awards 2012

Dare I say, perfection?

What I wouldn't give to wear this shirttail hemmed dream.
She looks better than the runway model version.  Seriously.
Her bod looks aaaamazing in this dress.  Love the simplicity of the styling too.

 Color love.
 Sequin dipped Rachel.
 Love this on  Miss Knowles.
Love her pink pout.  And the dress.  The shoes are disappointing at best but I think I can get over it.
Silky dream.  Doubles as a nightgown, which I like.

MTV movie awards

The fashion at the MTV movie awards can be summed up using the following words:
short dresses and bad hair.

Charlize in my favorite look of the night. Does she ever look bad?
(also, has anyone seen Snow White and the Huntsman?)

Emma Stone looking totally glam-ified. Loving her fashion choices lately.

On the fence about Leighton. Love her makeup, iffy on the outfit, devastated about the hair.

Uh oh. What happened here? Poor girl got caught in some barbed wire!

Dear Emma, you should never, ever not have a pixie cut. Usually I refrain from using double negatives in my writing but this calls for it. There is no positive about this look.

Just because she's marrying JT doesn't mean she has to sport a virginal white bridal look until the wedding. On the plus side, great shoes!

 Two words: Kangaroo Pouch.

Is she wearing sheer hosiery? Did she get caught in a wind tunnel? I am so over K-Stew.

Nikki Reed-love the dress but hate the chunk of hair in the front. Also, she looks mildly constipated.

shampoo and condition

Every so often I get in a shampoo/conditioner rut and start looking for a new one.  With so many options out there it can be so overwhelming!  Clients often ask which kind they should use.  As a cardinal rule I like to tell them that if their hair is colored (whose isn't?)  they should probably be using a color safe S & C.  Also.  It's not a bad idea to have a couple different ones in the shower and rotate them!  Oh!  And keeping a good deep conditioner in there to use about once a week isn't a bad idea either.

With that,  I've compiled a list of my FAVORITE Shampoos and Conditioners.  A little something for everyone.

Bumble and Bumble have a new product called "Color Minded"  which is now favorite.
Bb says:  Our latest line features a sulfate free cleanser (which we love) and moisture rich conditioner and multitasking stylers with UV filters and heat protection.  Brilliant!! AND it smells good too.

Matrix Amplify
An oldie but a goody.   Such a classic pair and they won't break the bank!

 Bumble and Bumble
The best of the bunch.  It a little bit kills me that they are from two different 'lines.'  But the Creme de Coco is my favorite shampoo while Super Rich is easily my favorite conditioner.  Warning: super rich is not for those whose hair is easily weighed down.  Thin, fine hair steer clear.

 Goldwell Color Glow
A great pair for colored hair.  Restores the PH balance after being colored.  Love the smell, and how easily it works into the hair.

S Factor Smoothing

My ALL time favorite smelling shampoo and conditioner.  Did someone just put open a package of sweet tarts?  What's that you say, it's your hair?  AMAZING.

Moroccan Oil
Great option for girls with unruly hair.  If you're looking to take a ride on the smooth train, this one has your ticket.  CHOO CHOO!

-Ok, so now that I've shared all my shampoo&conditioner secrets with you, return the favor!!  What's your favorite?
